Herath Set to Become Sri Lanka Test Captain

Herath Oldest Test Captain in History:

Rangana Herath is set to captaincy debut in Test series 2016 against Zimbabwe. Angelo Mathew will miss out playing in test series and ODI Tri-Series involving West Indies. Captaincy role is tossed to Herath, who will become the oldest cricketer to captain international team in a Test match for the first time. Rangana Herath is 38 years and 219 days old, he did a test debut on September 22, 1999 against Australia at Galle. Herath has played 73 test matches and 71 ODI matches, 53 T20 games, 245 first class matches and 190 List A matches during his career that span over 20 years. Herath will make a new record of becoming the oldest captain to lead a test team for the first time.

Angelo Mathews sustained calf injury during 4th ODI against Australia. He was retired hurt but then came back out to bat when Sri Lanka was struggling to put decent total on the board. Mathews was named in the original squad for tour of Zimbabwe but he is still not recovered fully to play cricket. Angelo Mathews won't be part of Sri Lanka team for Test series and will most likely miss one day international tri-series. Vice captain Dinesh Chandimal injured himself while playing in domestic competition. Chandimal will need thumb surgery and will not be part of Sri Lanka squad for tour of Zimbabwe.

Herath Bowling Record:

Rangana Herath retired from one day international games so he can focus more on Test cricket. He took 332 test wickets and 74 ODI wickets, his performance in First Class games is exceptional with 961 wickets. Herath will become second Sri Lankan bowler to captain the side in Test cricket and oldest captain to lead a test team for the first time in cricket history. Sri Lanka tour of Zimbabwe includes a two test match series followed by an one day international tri-series including West Indies as a third team. Regular captain and vice captain are both struggling to recover from injuries. Herath will be captain in Test series against Zimbabwe. Due to retirement earlier this year Sri Lanka might have to find a new leader for Tri-ODI series in Zimbabwe.
