Afridi No Longer PSL Peshawar Captain:
Pakistan former T20 captain, Shahid Khan Afridi has decided not be captain of T20 team in PSL 2017. Shahid Afridi was captain of Peshawar Zalmi franchise team in PSL 2016. However, he decided to hand over captaincy to Darren Sammy, overseas player from West Indies. Afridi made an announcement during PSL edition 2 draft and criticized WICB of not respecting Darren Sammy and stripping him off T20 captaincy after world cup T20 final win. Afridi made couple of announcement during the draft. First announcement was that Younus Khan is hired as mentor of Peshawar Zalmi team and second announcement was Afridi hand over over PSL Peshawar team captaincy to Sammy.
Why Afridi Quit PSL Captaincy:
Shahid Afridi hinted some differences with Peshawar Zalmi franchise owner Javed Afridi. It could be the main reason Afridi doesn't want to lead Peshawar Zalmi team anymore. Pakistan Super League T20 competition is played with a view to improve cricket infrastructure in country. Camps are organized through out Pakistan from all five franchise to discover talented players. In an interview with Cricket Australia, Afridi said, "I am a professional cricketer and whichever franchise needs me I am available for it. It is not that I am confined to Peshawar Zalmi only,". Afridi added, "No doubt that my current team is Zalmi but before moving forward I need to sort out some things with Javed Afridi (owner and chairman of Peshawar Zalmi). Afridi is open to represent any team in PSL competition, Boom Boom is still Pakistan fan hero even though he is not playing any international cricket for Pakistan.
Afridi Captaincy Record in PSL:
Afridi led Peshawar Zalmi to qualifying final round in PSL 2016. Peshawar team won 6 matches in Pakistan Super League 2016 edition and lost only 2 matches in the league game. Afridi was leading team from the front and he was 2nd highest wicket taker for franchise and 8th highest wicket over all in the tournament. Peshawar Zalmi team was on top of the points table with 12 points followed by Quetta Gladiators. Peshawar team lost both matches in qualifying round and couldn't make it to the final. They lost first qualifying match to Quetta Gladiators by 1 runs and lost second qualifying match to Islamabad United by 50 runs. Below is points table of Pakistan Super League 2016.
