Star India wins IPL rights for US $2.55 billion for next 5 years:
Star
India will pay INR 12,347.5 crore (US $2.55 billion) for the TV & digital
rights of IPL for the upcoming 5 years. The single bidder Star India, which
made a combined offer for IPL rights globally. Star India will own IPL rights
for a period of 5 years from 2018 to 2022.
Sony
also offered a bid of INR 11,050 crore to get the rights of Indian Premier
League for next 5 years but could not stand against Star India’s offer for the
global rights.
Star India beats Sony, others, wins IPL rights with US $2.55 billion
Star
India was not the top bidder in two categories including Indian television and
digital. Sony’s bid of INR 11,050 crore was the highest as compared to Star’s
INR 6,196.95 crore. Facebook offered a bid of INR 3900 crore for digital rights
in India & it was much higher than Star India’s INR 1443 crore.
Star
India chief executive told reporters that they think the Indian Premier League
is a powerful property & they believe they can create more value for
cricket fans on digital & Television.
Uday
Shankar added that India, cricket & Indian Premier League have changed significantly
since 2008 & this bid is a reflection of that.

cricket fans are in love with Twenty20 cricket, despite a spot fixing scandal
in 2013 which led to the ban of few cricketers & 2 year suspension of 2 IPL
teams.

started in 2008 & 8 teams were owned by richest personalities of India
including Bollywood actors.

companies had bought the tender document but out of it just 14 bid at the
event. The bids include TV in India, digital in India & rights for the
United States, Europe, Middle East, Africa & the remaining world. For the 5
international markets, the bids included both TV & digital rights. Star
bought all of them in combined global bid.
Star
India’s winning bid is a 158 percent boost in the media rights value for Indian
Premier League telecast from the earlier cycle. Earlier Sony bought TV rights
for US $1.63 billion for a period of 9 years from World Sports Group, who had
bought the rights for US $918 million from the BCCI for a 10 year period &
that cycle came to an end in 2017.
