Australia named squad for ODI Series

Australia ODI Squad for VB Series 2017:

Cricket Australia has announced ODI squad for Victoria Bitter series against Pakistan starting on 13th of January 2017. First match of ODI series will be played at Brisbane, then both teams will head to Melbourne and Perth for 2nd and 3rd ODI match respectively. 4th match of one day international series between Australia and Pakistan will be played at Sydney and fifth and final ODI will be played at Adelaide. ODI series will span over two weeks, both teams will have slightly different squad that represented country in Test format. Australia has made some surprise changes in its ODI squad, new faces are introduced and some big names are omitted. Senior players would be rest at some stage of the ODI series. Australia has dropped George Bailey and Aaron Finch from ODI squad against Pakistan, but doors are not shut on them. Considering their poor performance in recent 10 ODI matches, both players would have to find form in current Big Bash League and by playing domestic and first class cricket. Finch and Bailey has not made a hundred in past few one day international matches, and it is a tough call to axed such big names. Both players have contributed a lot in past 4 years, they are both in ICC top 20 ODI batsman and Bailey is top runs-scorer for Australia in last 4 years while Finch is 3rd highest runs-maker during same duration. Coach Darren Lehman said about Finch, "Obviously he's been an integral part since the World Cup but performances for Aaron have not been what we would've liked and what he would've liked to be perfectly honest. He hasn't made a hundred since Canberra last year. The challenge for him is to make big runs in the BBL and get back into the side. Lehman also added that "Tough call on George as well. He's a ripper bloke, he's fantastic around the group and he's been fantastic as a leader as well. Again, it's down to performances from George. He's got to go back and make big runs. The door is not shut on any of those players by the way when you're looking at this form of the game with Champions Trophy coming up. George has got to perform well and really put his case forward." Both players would be bit disappointed but opportunities are presented to them to make their way back in to Australian national ODI squad.

Australia has announced that two uncapped players will be part of ODI series against Pakistan. Batsman Chris Lynn has won the hearts of Australian fans in Big Bash 2017, he is tournament top scorer and has impressed selectors. Uncapped batsman Chris Lynn is included in Australia ODI team. Another inclusion is uncapped fast bowler Billy Stanlake who has only played 2 first-class matches and four List-A games for Australia. His height and bounce would be a big advantage for Australia and will be expected to play on pitches which suits his type of bowling. "He's tall, he's fast, he's got some bounce. So that's a pleasing thing for us," Lehmann said. "He will more than likely only play a couple of games depending on the make-up of the side and where we play. It's a good challenge for a young kid coming through." Fast bowler Mitchell Starc and Hazlewood could be rested during some stage of the tournament while standlake could make his ODI debut.

Usman Khawaja is added to ODI squad even though he was ignored in Australia recent ODI series against New Zealand. Khawaja has piled up a lot of runs in Sheffield Sheild and Test series and kept knocking on selectors doors to be included in ODI squad. Khawaja is most likely to open the innings along with David Warner. Cricket Australia continue to sideline Peter Nevil and has their fatih in wicket keeping of Mathew Wade. Glenn Maxwell is added to Australia ODI team, he was part of the squad in recent ODI series against Black Caps but didn't play. Let's see if he would be given a role as allrounder in this ODI series.
