Kyle Coetzer Named as Scotland Captain:
Scotland cricket board has announced Kyle Coetzer as new captain of Scotland cricket team. Coetzer had a stint as captain of Scotland in 2013, it will be the second time he has been given the opportunity again. Coetzer is appointed as captain on temporary basis at the moment to fill the gap after an early retirement of Preston Mommsen from cricket. Scotland Cricket Board will name a full time captain in March 2017 after conclusion of Desert T20 tournament in UAE. It is expected that top 8 associate teams will participate in a T20 tournament schedule in January in United Arab Emirates. Coetzer captaincy in T20 league will be closely monitored by board in order to offer him a permanent captaincy role. Con de Lange is appointed as Coetzer deputy in upcoming T20 tournament.
Kyle James Coetzer is 32 year old and he has a lot of cricket experience. Coetzer has scored 1230 runs in 31 ODI innings at an average of 41. Apart from Coetzer former captain Mommsend and Richie Berrington has both scored over 1000 runs in one day internationals for Scotland. Coetzer has got 750 runs in 35 T20 matches, 4325 first class runs, 3895 List A runs and 2039 Twenty20 runs under his name. Kyle achieved history when he struck first ODI hundred in ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 against Bangladesh. Coetzer made 156 runs in the match which is the most ever made by an Associate cricket batsman. Handy Experience and heaps of exposure to international matches makes Coetzer best candidate for captaincy role.
Preston Mommsen retired from cricket due to lack of international fixtures. Mommsen retired at a young age of 29 while his performance was at the peak of his career. Mommsen stated, "In the last 12 months, certainly, that's not been there, and unfortunately, that has made my decision easier. I can't see that pathway for me over the next 12-18 months that can keep me in and drive me forward." His retirement was a big blow to Scotland cricket, Scotland has decided to move on and named Kyle James Coetzer as his replacement as Scotland captain.
Scotland coach Grant Bradburn said, “The Desert T20 will be a fantastic event to kick off what is an exciting and important year for us as a team. All the top Associate teams are improving rapidly and we look forward to some epic battles during this tournament, which we would love to become a regular feature on our playing calendar.”
